WHAT IS ACID REFLUX ?
When the valve linking the stomach and the oesophagus, also known as the sphincter, is weakened, acid reflux occurs. As the stomach wall weakens, stomach acid might leak back into the food pipe. Because the acid is an irritant, the lining of the food pipe gets inflamed, causing discomfort and heartburn. The fluid in your throat may be heated, acidic, or sour. When bending down or reclining down, you may get chest pain. If the condition occurs more than twice a week, gastroesophageal reflux disease develops (GERD).
Acid reflux affects around 10 million people in India each year. Acid reflux can be caused by pregnancy, obesity, diabetes, asthma, and other factors.
